I’ve been driving for 47 years, John, so as you can imagine I’ve had to do business with collision shops from time to time.The experience I’ve had over the last two weeks with Cole’s Collision Center has been the absolute best I’ve ever had, and I attribute that entirely and solely to Keith Kosakoski. Keith kept me fully informed every step of the way, as I’d requested, with brief e-mail bulletins, and when obstacles were encountered it seemed he didn’t merely overcome them…he vanquished them. Additionally, Keith is very patient, gentlemanly, and respectful of your clientele, which I greatly appreciate also. The long, warm and sunny summer days will soon give way to shorter days, colder temperatures and even snow which means a totally different operating atmosphere for your vehicle. This is an ideal time to check over your vehicle and make sure it is ready for the coming months. The following tips will help you drive into fall in tip top shape.

Check Your Battery

Chilly mornings and evenings will eventually lead to cold days, which can really put a strain on an older battery. Check the date of your battery, test it and make sure the connections are clean and secure so that your vehicle fires up without hesitation.

Check Your Tires

Fall brings hazardous driving conditions as wet pine needles and fallen leaves on the roadway can create slick surfaces. Make sure you have proper tire tread and check your tire pressure. Changes in temperature can cause tire pressure to change, so check it regularly and add air as needed. It’s also a good time to start thinking about winter tires.

Check Your Brakes

As mentioned above, changing weather means changing road conditions. Wet leaves, black ice, snow – it’s all coming to a road near you. Your brakes are a critical safety component, so proactively checking and maintaining them is essential. Take your vehicle to a certified mechanic to inspect your brakes so that when you need to stop, you can!

COLE’S COLLISION TO SPONSOR POPULAR LOCAL CAR SHOW

Ballston Spa, NY (September 29th , 2011) – Cole’s Collision will be sponsoring the 9th Annual “The Way We Were Car Show” on Sunday, October 9th in downtown Ballston Spa. The Annual event is expected to draw very large crowds to the community with all proceeds going to local community activities.

Hosting the event, The Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association has been putting on the car show for the past nine years. The first show attracted close to 150 cars and has since grown to over 450 entries in 2010. Hundreds of classic cars will line Front Street and Low Street in historic Ballston Spa from 9am-4pm and is expected, as in previous years, to draw thousands of participants and spectators to the village. Along the way people are entertained by food and promotional vendors as well as musical performances and of course hundreds of cars and trucks. There are cars to be seen for all tastes in vehicles from the all original cars of the 20’s through today, customs, street rods tuners, muscle cars, sports cars and trucks.

Cole’s Collision not only will be sponsoring “The Way We Were Car Show”, they will be taking part in it as well. Two of their cars have been registered for enthusiasts to view and they will be setting up two vendor tables giving away promotional prizes to spectators. Being involved with the community has always been a part of Coles Collision’s philosophy. Cole’s Collision owner John Cole and his employees take pride in being involved in many community events. John states, “Our customers are our lifeline and we appreciate each and every one of them”.

Make A Wish Foundation Give Away

A MAKE-A-WISH CHILD RECEIVES HIS WISH THANKS TO COLES COLLISION

Colonie, NY (January 11th, 2012) – In celebration of their 5th year anniversary passing on the 10th of January, Cole’s Collision Centers and owner John Cole have announced that they are teaming up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast New York to grant a wish to a local six-year-old-child from Albany County, who is battling a serious illness. Owner John Cole states, “There is no better way to express our gratitude for the community’s support these past five years, than to give back.” On January 26

John Cole is excited to be working with Make-A-Wish doing what he and his family are so passionate about; giving back to the community and those in need. Having been involved in a number of community service driven events over the years, this event, with such a remarkable charity, will truly serve as a monumental, humbling and fulfilling experience for him, his family, and his company.

This event not only marks the 5th Anniversary of Cole’s Collision, but it is also the 25th Anniversary of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast New York. Since 1987, this chapter of Make-A-Wish has granted more than 1,200 wishes for children in the Capital Region facing life threatening medical conditions and serious illnesses. Full wish sponsorships typically cost approximately $10,000, with an average of 90-100 children in the area getting their wishes granted each year.

In honor of the 25 years of service Make-A-Wish has given to the community, and in celebration of their own 5th year anniversary, Cole’s Collision extends a challenge to the community to join in supporting the mission of Make-A-Wish of Northeast New York by making a donation to sponsor as many other children’s wishes in the surrounding communities as possible. The vision of the collaboration of Make-A-Wish and Cole’s Collision is to raise enough money to sponsor four other children’s wishes, bringing the total to five children in the Capital Region whose wishes will be granted through this effort.

The fulfillment of Kaleb’s wish will be on January 26th from 3 to 5pm at Cole’s Colonie location, 1904 Central Avenue. Spring Car Care Tips

Spring is coming! Celebrate the season with these 6 spring car care tips:

Check battery: After a long, cold winter it’s good to have your battery tested as well as making sure it’s clean, secure and corrosion free.
Wash and wax: Thoroughly clean your car to get rid of dirt, debris and any leftover salt from the winter, which can cause rust and damage to your car. Be sure to clean the undercarriage. Waxing your car will help to protect it from oxidation and the elements.
Clean interior: There’s a good chance you haven’t cleaned the inside of your car during the cold weather, so now that it’s getting warmer it’s a good time to break out the cleaning supplies. Remove any trash, vacuum the floors and upholstery, clean the inside of the windows and clean all plastics. Hang an air freshener and you’re good to go!
Check tire pressure: Tire pressure will decrease in the cold temperature. Warmer temperatures may increase tire pressure. With temperature fluctuation, it’s a good time to check your PSI.
Check alignment & suspension: Winter can be especially tough on your vehicle because of potholes or rocks in the road, which can damage your car’s alignment or suspension. If your car pulls to one side or vibrates as you drive, this is an indicator that there may be an issue.
Check fluids: Spring is a good time for an oil change if you haven’t gotten one during the winter. Check your fluids as well, such as transmission, wiper, power steering, brake fluid and coolant.

A s much as we have a passion for automobiles, we also love the environment .That is why we have taken steps to reduce the harsh toxins that can be emitted from large shops such as ourselves.

One way we have moved towards becoming “ green ” is by switching our paint system to a water based brand of PPG paint. This paint continues to give your car that nice shine while presenting less risk to the environment.

Tire Tips to Roll into Spring

It’s time to get your car’s tires prepped for warmer weather after the long winter. Taking care of your vehicle now will also make sure you’re ready for summer road trips and vacations. Below are 5 tips for making sure your tires are ready for spring:

Have your snow tires removed as soon as winter weather ends. Snow tires will wear much faster than regular tires because they are made of a very soft rubber and are designed for colder temperatures. Leaving them on longer than needed will make them wear out much faster. April is generally a good time to change them, weather depending.
Check the wear on your snow tires. Winter tires should be retired sooner than conventional tires. A tire store or auto shop can measure your tread for you to see if it’s time for a new set. Safety first!
Inspect, rotate, and align. If you’re having your tires changed, this is a good time to also check the alignment. If you’ve been using all-season tires, you should also have them rotated and check the tire tread to ensure they have enough traction for the rainy spring months.
Check and adjust the tire pressure of your all season or summer tires. Anytime there is a significant change in temperature, it’s a good time to check the tire pressure. Consult your owner’s manual or look on the inside of your driver door to see what PSI your front and rear tires should be at.
Don’t forget to check your spare – Possibly one of the most important tires on your car but often forgotten about until you need it – the spare! Spring is a good time to check on the spare tire and make sure it’s properly inflated and does not have any issues or damage.

History of Land Rover

In 1947, Maurice Wilks started the design of the original Land Rover at the Rover Company. The first Land Rover was officially launched in 1948 at the Amsterdam Motor Show. The original color choices for the vehicle were various shades of light green due to the availability of military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint. The prototype was built on a Jeep chassis and axles.

The Series II Land Rover was made from 1958-1961 and its engine became the standard Land Rover unit through the mid-1980s when diesel engines became popular.

The Series IIA vehicles were made from 1961-1971, and included one of the most iconic Land Rover styles due to their popularity in movies and TV documentaries throughout the 60s. There were a variety of vehicle types in the Series II such as a station wagon, pickup-type, Forest Rover and ambulance vehicles.

The Range Rover Classic was a 4×4, mid-size SUV that was made from 1970-1996. Today, Land Rover makes a range of luxury and compact SUVs including the new Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, and the Discovery.

September is National Preparedness Month, and we’re here to give you a few tips on how to make your vehicle part of an effective emergency plan.

Keep Your Vehicle Properly Maintained

A properly maintained vehicle will be free of any check-engine lights, have regular fluid changes and filter replacements as the vehicle manual suggests, and be free of any major mechanical or cosmetic issues that may hinder drivability or vehicle safety. Preventative maintenance is critical to staying on the road and avoiding breakdowns.

Tires, Tires, Tires

If your tires fail, you’re not going anywhere. Good tires will have sufficient tread, correct tire pressure, be free of leaky valve stems or seals, and be appropriate for the driving conditions they will be subjected to. This rings especially true for drivers in the Northeast, where snow tires are preferred for the winter months.

Assemble a Vehicle Emergency Kit

This is a very commonly overlooked tip, but one that can save your life in an emergency situation. Emergency kits can contain anything necessary to keep you and your family safe in an emergency with common items including jumper cables, basic tools, first-aid kit, blankets, bottled water, non-perishable food, cell phone charger, flashlight and extra batteries.

Don’t forget your spare! Your spare tire should be accessible, free of rot and at correct pressure so that it is ready to drive on at any moment. You’ll also want to have a jack, lug wrench and flares or reflectors to make the tire change easily and safely.

BOO! Halloween is right around the corner, which means trick or treaters will be coming to a street near you. For a safe Halloween night, read on and keep the following driving safety tips in mind.

Watch for Trick or Treaters

Children of all ages will be out and about walking along the road or sidewalks and crossing the streets. Their movements are generally hard to predict, so it is more important than ever to drive slowly and be aware of everything that is going on around your vehicle.

Watch for Parents

Let’s not forget the parents accompanying their trick or treaters on this candy collecting adventure. Parents may be standing along the side of the road waiting for their trick or treaters and might be hard to see, so exercise caution and keep an eye out for pedestrians both big and small.

Be Predictable

Making sure other drivers and pedestrians know what your intentions are as a driver will help to minimize confusion for everyone. Being a predictable driver is one of the best defensive driving tips for any situation, and its importance with increased pedestrian traffic cannot be understated. Coming to a full stop at stop signs and stop lights is critical, as is using your turn signals and hazard lights when appropriate. Turning on your headlights earlier than normal can also help make your vehicle more visible when the daylight starts to fade.

Ditch the Distractions

You have enough to keep your eyes on this Halloween with trick or treaters, parents and other vehicles sharing the roads with you. Tuck your phone out of sight and turn your radio down so that you can keep your eyes and ears on the environment around you.

History of Jaguar

It all started in 1922 when William Lyons started the Swallow Sidecar Company which originally made motorcycle sidecars. He built his first car a few years later, the SS1, and in 1935 built the SS Jaguar, the first car of the line for which the company became famous for. Here is a quick history of some of the most notable Jaguar models over the years.

In 1937, they created the SS Jaguar 2½ Liter Sedan which was the first car to have four doors.

The XK120 was released in 1948 and became the world’s fastest production car, reaching speeds of 133 mph.

In 1951, the C-Type came out. This model weighed 25% less and its design was inspired by aerodynamics. The C-Type was a successful racing car, winning the Le Mans 24 hours race twice, in 1951 and in 1953.

The D-Type was introduced in 1954 and featured a unique stable wing designed by Malcolm Sayers. This model also won at Le Mans several times, including in 1957 when it won 5 of the top 6 places.

Jaguar launched their iconic E-Type in 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show. The car was referred to as “the most beautiful care ever made” by Enzo Ferrari and was on the list of Sports Car International magazine’s list of the “Top Sports Cars of the 1960s.”

Regarded as the definitive Jaguar saloon, the iconic XJ series was made from 1968 to 1992. The original model was the last Jaguar car to have the input of founder William Lyons. The XJ220 was the fastest production car in 1992.

Check Your Tire Pressure

Colder weather can take a toll on a vehicle, especially when it comes to your tires. Cold air is less dense than warm air, which means that when the temperature drops, your tire pressure may too. Many newer cars have tire pressure sensors and monitors that will tell you when it’s time to get air, but if you’re driving an older vehicle without these electronic sensors, it’s important to check before hitting the road to ensure your tire pressure is correct.

Check Your Fluids

Antifreeze, oil, windshield washer fluid – run low on any of these and your travel plans may come to a grinding halt. Before you take off, check your fluid levels and top off as needed. Your vehicle and your passengers will thank you!

Winter Tires : Quality winter tires are essential to staying safe in snowy or icy conditions. If you have winter tires from last year, check the condition to ensure they are still ready to perform. If you do not have winter tires, start researching a set for your vehicle.

Battery for Cold Mornings : Winters in the Northeast can be brutally cold, and this can take a toll on your vehicle’s battery. If your battery is between three and five years old, it may be time to replace it. A trusted mechanic will be of great help in deciding which battery to choose, but if you buy your own, the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating is important. The higher the number, the better the battery will perform in cold weather.

Use Caution : Drive slowly and carefully when you don’t know the roads or the conditions – black ice is possible even when the temperature is just above freezing.

Drive Defensively : Winter or not, watching your own driving is only half of the battle – other drivers’ actions can directly affect you. Keep an eye on your surroundings, especially in winter weather conditions, to help prevent your involvement in other drivers’ mistakes.

Heating System : Making sure that your vehicle’s heat functions properly is an absolute necessity for the cold weather. You’ll need your defroster to see and you’ll need your heat to stay comfortable.

Winter-Proof Fluids : Antifreeze and cold weather-rated windshield washer fluid are necessities for the winter. Antifreeze keeps your engine coolant from freezing and windshield washer fluid that is rated for cold temperatures (most are) can help keep your windshield clear of sleet, snow and ice. Pro tip: never use hot water to defrost your windshield!

It’s safe to say that the cars of these movies were definitely more functional than fashionable, but iconic nonetheless. Now who wants to watch a Christmas movie?!

1989 Ford Taurus Wagon – The Griswold family car that was part of the iconic opening car chase scene, had wood paneling, which was very popular at the time. There were actually two of these cars made for the movie, a 1988 model and a 1989 model. The wood paneling was custom added for the movie.

1937 Oldsmobile Six Touring Sedan – “Some men are Baptists, others Catholics, my father was an Oldsmobile man.” Remember when Ralphie said “Ohhhh fuuuudge”? This is the car his dad was driving when they had to change the tire. The base price for this car in 1937 was $895!

1986 Dodge Ram Van – This is the infamous “OH-KAY Plumbing & Heating” van that followed Kevin around in Home Alone. Although Chrysler would eventually make two redesigns of this type of van, much of the exterior would remain nearly unchanged over 33 years, making it one of the longest-used automotive platforms in American automotive history. Who knew the sticky bandits were using such an iconic vehicle?!

1995 GMC Suburban 1500 SLT – Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character goes through a lot with this vehicle as he tries to find a Turbo-Man action figure for his son, and eventually finds his car stripped and emptied by thieves. Although it has changed over time, the Chevrolet Suburban is the longest continuous use automobile nameplate in production, starting in 1935, and has been one of General Motors’ most profitable vehicles.

1950 Plymouth Special De Luxe Station Wagon – This movie uses a much different station wagon than what we see in Christmas Vacation! Only about 2,000 of these wagons were made in 1950, and it was the highest priced Plymouth at the time, with a price tag of $2,372.

Everyone always talks about preparing your vehicle for winter, but what about for summer? The summer is a busy time of year filled with vacations, road trips and fun summer activities. Make sure your car is ready for all the summer fun with these 6 tips:

Check the air conditioner – Make sure the air conditioning is working so you can stay cool on those hot days. If the AC is weak or not working at all, it’s time to get it to the mechanic to diagnose the issue.
Get a sun shade – A reflective sun shade should be used whenever you park your car in direct sunlight to protect your car’s interior from the heat.
Check the tires – Be sure to check your tires for tread wear and leaks so that they are ready for summer road trips! Also make sure the tires are properly inflated as changing temperatures can lead to a change in PSI.
Check your brakes – When’s the last time your brakes were checked? Don’t wait for them to start squeaking, have your mechanic inspect the condition of your front and rear brakes to be sure they are in proper condition for your next adventure.
Wax on – Keep your ride looking good and feeling good with a wash, wax and interior detail.
Check coolant – Summer means hot temperatures, and your car needs to stay cool. Check your coolant level regularly and top off as needed.

2017 Year in Review: Cole’s Collision Centers

As we look back on 2017, we realized that a lot has happened here at Cole’s Collision Centers over the past year! 2017 was a big year for us, so let’s take a look back at some of the highlights with our 2017 Year in Review

We are incredibly grateful for the growth, opportunities and partnerships 2017 brought us. We look forward to another great year in 2018!

Celebrated 10 years in business – In January of 2017, we celebrated being open for ten years! We opened our first Cole’s Collision Center in Colonie in January 2007 with just three employees. Since then, Cole’s Collision has expanded to five locations across the Capital Region and now employs 80 people.

Opened new location in North Greenbush – We opened our 5th location in September 2017 in North Greenbush. This location is a 14,000 square foot facility that uses 2.2 acres of formerly vacant land located at 97 US Route 4. Opening this location was several years in the making and involved a lot of work and planning. At the grand opening, we also presented a donation of $2,500 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Rensselaer County.

Announced Jaguar Land Rover Certification – We were happy to announce that in December of 2017, we became a part of the Jaguar Land Rover Aluminum Repair Network, joining a list of only 105 certified shops in North America to have this certification. Becoming a part of this network was an important step for us, and also a major investment to put our technicians and managerial staff through the rigorous and exclusive Jaguar Land Rover training program.

Announced Tesla Certification – On December 26, 2017, Cole’s Collision Centers completed extensive Tesla training to become the first Tesla authorized body shop in the Capital Region. This past September, John Cole attended the ribbon cutting for 20 newly-installed Tesla supercharging stations at Crossgates Mall in Albany.

Make-A-Wish trip for Tyler Murray – We had the honor of meeting Tyler Murray through the Make-A-Wish Foundation and donated $12,000 to fund Tyler’s wish of going to the Nike headquarters in Oregon to meet the famous shoe designer Tinker Hatfield. After his trip, we hosted a stewardship meeting with Tyler and his family, where Tyler showed us photos and told us about his experience.

History of Tesla

Tesla was founded in 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. In 2004, Elon Musk joined Tesla and led the Series A round of investment. Their primary goal was to commercialize electric vehicles, starting with a premium sports car and then moving to more mainstream vehicles such as sedans and affordable compacts.

From 2004-2007, Tesla worked on designing prototypes for the Tesla Roadster. They produced and sold the Roadsters from 2008-2012. The Roadster was the first highway legal serial production all-electric car to use lithium-ion battery cells and the first production all-electric car to travel more than 200 miles per charge. More recently, this car also became the first production car to be launched into orbit, carried by a Falcon Heavy rocket in a test flight on February 6, 2018.

In 2012, Tesla introduced the Model S which is a full-sized all-electric five-door luxury liftback. The Model S was the top selling plug-in electric car worldwide in 2015 and 2016, and by the end of 2017 it was the second-most sold electric car in history next to the Nissan Leaf. It has won numerous awards including the 2013 World Green Car of the Year, 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year, and Automobile magazine’s 2013 Car of the Year.

Tesla Model S

Tesla unveiled the Model 3 in 2016 and production began in mid-2017. This model is a mid-size all-electric four-door sedan and delivers an EPA-rated all-electric range of 220 miles. The Model 3 was also given the 2018 Design of the Year award by Automobile magazine.

As we enter the New Year, we are all thinking of things we can improve on, and taking care of our vehicle is a great area to focus on! Here are five ideas for car care New Year’s resolutions for 2018:

Wash your car regularly – This is especially important during the winter months as road salt can corrode your vehicle. Try to wash your car as often as possible in the winter, making sure to clean the wheel wells and undercarriage too. Common reasons for a wash in the warmer months include tree sap, bird droppings, spilled beverages, and pollen.
Save all your car care receipts – Many of us forget to do this but it can be very important to save all your receipts whenever you get repairs or maintenance done on your car. First off, it’s a good way to keep track for yourself, so you don’t forget when you had your brakes checked last, or when you last replaced the air filter. It is also important if you plan on selling your car in the future, as this will show the new buyer that you took good care of the vehicle and also shows them proof of when you had certain components repaired or replaced. Having proper car maintenance records may also be needed if have you a manufacturer’s warranty on your car, because a future warranty claim may be denied if you cannot prove that you’ve gotten regular oil changes and other suggested maintenance at the intervals it recommends.
Check your oil and get it changed regularly – Make sure to check your oil and get it changed at the recommended intervals. If you skip oil changes, this can cause the engine to run less efficiently and experience significant damage. Refer to your owner’s manual for recommended service.
Maintain your car’s interior – Keeping the interior of your car clean and maintained will help preserve the resale value of your car and also make your car rides more comfortable for both you and your passengers. Vacuuming regularly is one of the best ways to keep your car clean and to get rid of any debris that collects on the floor or seats of the car. It’s also a good idea to use fabric or leather upholstery cleaner for the seats. Protective creams can be used on the vinyl and plastic parts of the car such as the dashboard, which can protect against old age and sun exposure.
 Rotate tires and check tire pressure regularly – You should check your tire pressure often, as the pressure can fluctuate when the temperature changes outside. You can check the recommended tire pressure in your car’s manual or on the driver’s side door. It is also recommended that you rotate your tires to promote even tread wear. A good time to rotate tires is when you get your oil changed.

Cole’s Collision Centers Promotes Two to Managerial Roles at Clifton Park Location

Cole’s Collision Centers, the fastest growing family-owned auto repair company in the Capital Region, continues to support company growth with the promotions of Anthony Valenti to manager and Amanda Giancamillo to assistant shop manager.

In his role as manager, Valenti supervises all staff at Cole’s Clifton Park location. He also maintains strong relationships with insurance partners, provides front end customer service and is responsible for the shop meeting its annual performance goals. Valenti has been with Cole’s Collision since 2015.

As assistant manager, Giancamillo assists with providing service estimates, creating repair plans for customers and manages day-to-day activities at the Clifton Park location. Giancamillo first joined Cole’s in 2013.

“We are fortunate to have talented staff members who allow us to promote from within as the company grows,” said Josh Jewett, general manager. “Anthony and Amanda bring unique knowledge and skills to our team, which will help us to continue providing customers with the superior quality work and outstanding service for which Cole’s is known.”

Cole’s Collision Center’s has experienced rapid growth since opening its first location in Colonie in 2007. The company, which employs 92 people, operates five service centers in Colonie, North Greenbush, Clifton Park, Ballston Spa and Wilton.

5 Winter Car Washing Tips

Keeping your vehicle clean throughout the winter months can be challenging. Snow, ice, road salt and freezing temperatures add up to dirty, frozen cars. However, with a few good habits you can keep your vehicle looking and feeling good this winter!

Frequent car washes: A good rule of thumb is to try to wash your car every 10 days in the winter, given that the temperature is at least 40 degrees. It is best to use a professional car wash with handheld pressure wands which can help you thoroughly clean the car’s body as well as undercarriage, where salt buildup can occur.
Dry thoroughly: Make sure to dry your car thoroughly to prevent collected water from freezing your doors or trunk shut. Use a clean microfiber cloth to dry the vehicle and leave the doors open so moisture does not collect.
Protect wheels and tires: Use protective wax for your wheels or wheel coatings to prevent brake dust adhesion and repel snow and ice. Protect your car’s tires with a tire gel which hydrates the rubber to keep it flexible in the cold winter months.
Rubber floor mats: Replace carpet floor mats with rubber ones. This will prevent salt from staining the carpet and also prevent salty water from soaking through the carpet and rusting or corroding the floor of the car.
 Remove snow and ice: It’s tempting to just do a quick clean of snow or ice and be on your way, however be sure to thoroughly remove all snow and ice from your vehicle before taking off. Not only is it a safety issue, but it will also help your vehicle from becoming a frozen mess.

So keep your vehicle clean this winter and remember, spring is just a couple of months away!

1968 Ford Mustang GT – This car was part of the famous chase scene in the movie “Bullitt” with Steve McQueen. In celebrating the 50th anniversary of the movie, Ford has recently introduced a 2019 Mustang Bullitt that will come out this summer.

VW Touran – Used in the movie “Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift”, this unique and highly customized car is themed around the Incredible Hulk and is driven by rapper Bow Wow in the movie. The vehicle can now be found outside of the “Hulk” rollercoaster at Universal Studios in Florida.

Willy’s MB Army Jeep – This jeep was designed for the US Army in the 1940s and was part of the Allies success in World War II. It is also how the word “jeep” came about because it was designated for Government Purposes aka “GP.” The vehicle was so popular that Willys-Overland designed another version of it for the post-war civilian market.

5 Summer Car Washing Tips

Summer is officially here! With winter long gone and sunny warm weather upon us, it’s a great time to give your vehicle the thorough wash, wax, and detail it deserves. To get you started, we’ve assembled a few tips to help get your ride looking its best:

Always use products specifically meant for vehicles. If you're thinking about grabbing the dish soap and heading for the car, don’t do it! It’s not meant to be used on a vehicle’s paint and could do more harm than good. Instead, opt for car wash-specific soaps.
Rinse before you mitt. Start by thoroughly rinsing your vehicle to remove large debris. Then move on to hand washing with soap and water. Work your way from the top down, as the lower portion of your vehicle is likely the dirtiest.
Dry in the shade. To help avoid water spots, try not to dry your vehicle off in sunny areas. Pull into a shady spot so that you can dry your vehicle before the sun does.
Wax on. Help protect your paint with a coat of quality wax. This will give it that extra shine while simultaneously preserving the exterior of your vehicle.
Give the interior some attention too. Remove and clean the floor mats, vacuum the seats and carpets, clean the dash and plastics, tidy up the center console and glovebox, and top it off with a summer-scent air freshener.

Bonus Tip: Your tires would appreciate a little attention too! Tire shine takes just a short minute to apply and will make your tires look like new. Be sure to apply tire shine only to the sidewall and not the tread.

On the Road Again: Preparing for Your Next Road Trip

Summer = Road Trips! Before you channel your inner Clark Griswold and hit the road à la National Lampoon’s Vacation, take the time to plan and prepare so that your trip can be smooth and enjoyable.

Start off with an actual plan. Chart out your times, your route, where you’ll stop for fuel/food/resting, and where you can stop in case of emergency.

Once you have your itinerary established, let your family know so that they are aware of where you’re headed and when. This is for both your safety and your family’s interest in case they need to reach you.

As departure day draws near, start assembling some emergency supplies. A good roadside kit will include things like first aid supplies, a reflective warning triangle, jumper cables, tow rope and basic tools. It’s also wise to pack a couple of bottles of water and non-perishable snacks in the event that you become stranded and have to wait for help.

Finally, make sure your vehicle is prepped for travel. It should be current on all maintenance, inspection and registration. Tires should be properly inflated and the spare should be inspected. Fluid levels should be to the specs in your owner’s manual. Battery terminals should be clean and secure. When in doubt, have a certified mechanic check over your vehicle to be sure it’s road trip worthy.

History of Volvo

Volvo was founded in 1927 in Gothenburg, Sweden by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson as a subsidiary of a ball bearing company named SKF. The very first Volvo car, nicknamed ‘Jakob’ left the assembly line on April 14, 1927. The objective was to produce vehicles that could withstand the rugged terrain and weather of Sweden, unlike the available foreign models at the time. Grabrielsson and Larson can be quoted saying, “Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, therefore, is and must remain, safety.” Over the past 91 years, Volvo has consistently lived up to their main values of innovation, safety and even sustainability.

A leader in safety innovation, Volvo released the first three-point safety belt in 1959 in their production of the PV544. The engineer who pioneered the invention, Nils Bohlin, waived his rights to the patent for the belt so that everybody could benefit. It has been estimated that since then, over one million lives have been saved thanks to this historical evolution in automobile production. But Volvo didn’t stop there. They are also responsible for the invention of the rear facing child safety seat, engineered in 1972, and the child booster seat in 1976, now a standard in child safety. In 1976, Volvo also released the lambda sond, a small device that improved emissions on vehicles by 90 percent and is now found on almost every vehicle found on the road today. In more recent years, they have continued to improve the safety of people with technology like their Blind Spot Information System (2003) and Pedestrian Detection (2010).

Check your windshield wipers – Fall can be very rainy by nature, so effective windshield wipers are paramount. Check your tire tread – A wet, rainy season paired with fallen leaves can leave an unexpected slip hazard. Place a penny upside down between each of the treads. If you can see Abe’s head it may be time for new tires. When in doubt, ask a certified mechanic.
Inspect your headlights and taillights – It gets darker earlier this time of year, and the deer population is rising. Make sure your lights are all in working order and clean so that you can see any potential hazards on the road clearly, and so that anyone else on the road can see you as well.
Top off fluids and get an oil change – Temperatures vary greatly during the fall. They can dip very low during the evenings and mornings yet be warm midday. If your vehicle’s fluids are not clean and at proper levels this can keep them from doing their job to keep your car running smoothly.
Have your brakes checked – Between morning frost, rainy conditions, fog, deer, fallen leaves and school traffic, it’s imperative that brakes are in good working order. Squeaks and vibrations are common signs that new brakes are in order. As always, when in doubt ask a certified mechanic.

October is Fall Car Care Month, which means it’s time to start getting your vehicle prepared for the icy, snowy months ahead. As a driver you know the struggles of avoiding black ice, clearing ice and snow from your vehicle and waiting for it to warm up each morning. Following these maintenance tips can help make sure your car is in proper shape to handle whatever winter throws at you.

Tire Pressure

The cold weather can cause your tires to drop in pressure by about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit that the temperature drops. When your tires are low in air it can affect the way your vehicle handles, increase the chances of a blown tire and decrease your fuel efficiency. So make sure they’re properly inflated. You can check what the proper PSI is for your vehicle’s tires by looking at the sticker on the inside of the driver door.

Winter roads can be extra tricky between snow, ice and the cold weather. This means that your tires are not only taking an extra beating but they’re also playing an extra important role in keeping you safe. Tire tread is what allows your tires to grip and not slide. Not only do you want to check tread depth, but you also want to consider what type of tire you are running. Consider snow tires for passenger vehicles or all-terrain tires for trucks during winter.

Coolant consists of a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze and it keeps your engine from overheating while your vehicle is running. During the winter, if this mixture isn’t just right, it can also freeze and cause damage. So before the weather gets cold, simply check to make sure that the mixture is correct and that your coolant is topped off.

Most wiper blades are only good for six months to a year, so if your wipers are starting to leave streaks on your windshield when it rains, now is a good time to replace them. There are plenty of potential risks during the winter months, and adding reduced visibility can only make it worse. While you’re checking the effectiveness of your current wipers, it’s a good idea to top off your wiper fluid to keep your windshield clean of salt and precipitation throughout these months.

Having your vehicle break down or winding up in a fender bender can be stressful enough without adding the cold weather to the mix. Keep these items in your car to make these situations less stressful in case they do occur: properly functioning jumper cables, water, warm blanket, first-aid kit, jack & tire iron, road flares or reflective triangle, flashlight, extra food and some kitty litter or sand for traction in case you get stuck.

The wintertime can be absolutely beautiful. Freshly fallen snow, snowmen, snowboarding (or tubing if that’s your thing), hot cocoa and the holidays all certainly make it a time to look forward to! This time of year also comes standard with a lot of travel. If you’re gearing up for a family road trip, you’re not alone. The roads will likely be full of travelers these next few months. Prepare Your Vehicle

To make sure that your family excursion goes smoothly, you’re going to first want to make sure your vehicle is up for the trip. You can start by ensuring that the registration, inspection and maintenance are all current. If any of these things need to be taken care of, call to schedule your appointment with your mechanic as early as you can, to make sure you can get in in time without stressing.

Class is in session! Whether you have young children heading off to grade school, a teenager who will be driving themselves to school, a college student leaving the nest or you simply live in a neighborhood with school-aged children, back to school is a time for exciting new beginnings. Mornings during the school year can also be a time for chaos and congested streets. Trying to get in to drop your kids off and get out in a timely manner so that you can make it to work on time can seem like an impossible task. However, making sure everyone makes it to school safely is much more important.

Follow these 5 simple tips to help keep your cool and keep everyone safe:

Leave the house 30 minutes early – When you’re in a hurry you’re stressed, and when you’re stressed you’re less alert. Leaving the house early gives you plenty of time to stop for children crossing crosswalks, stop behind busses loading and unloading passengers and to wait in the long vehicle line at drop off in front of the school. According to studies done by the National Safety Council, most children, ages 4 to 7, who lose their lives in bus-related incidents are either hit by a bus or by a motorist illegally passing a bus. So slow down, share the streets peacefully and leave the house with plenty of time to wait when necessary.
Don’t have your kids load and unload from across the street – As temping as this may be for convenience reasons, it puts the children in a position to have to cross the street at a busy time of the day when lots of other parents are trying to hurry as well.
Don’t double park – Again, it may seem like the perfect opportunity to get in and get out, but in reality double parking can make it hard or impossible for other vehicles or children to see oncoming traffic or pedestrians. Make sure their visibility (and yours) stays as clear as possible and simply wait your turn.
Carpool – It may seem like the perfect bonding time with your kids in the morning, or you may feel guilty for asking the neighbor or a friend who drives past your house in the mornings to take the kids with them. But carpooling is actually doing everyone a service. Not only is it easier on the environment by using one vehicle instead of two, it also reduces the amount of traffic at the school. For a nice bonus, offering to take turns gives each of you a few mornings of ‘me’ time throughout the week.

As we enter the hottest weeks of the summer, staying cool can become a priority not just for your comfort but for your vehicle’s too. Hot weather can have unexpected effects on your car. Use these 5 simple tips to keep you comfortable and keep your car in tip top shape through the dog days of summer.

Get a windshield sun shade – Not only can placing this simple accordion style cover across your windshield keep the temperatures in your car down by up to 40 degrees, they can protect your dash and interior. Allowing the sun to beat down on your dashboard and seats can cause fading, cracking, bubbling and unnecessary wear. Not to mention, nobody loves having to gasp for air when they crawl back into their car or peeling their legs off of the seats. So cover up that windshield and grab a shady spot to park.
Keep your air conditioning in proper working order – Air conditioning can be your car’s greatest gift to your comfort, especially when the heat starts climbing up over 80 and even having the windows down doesn’t seem to help. Keeping your windows up to have the A/C on can also improve aerodynamics and driving conditions, and help keep you alert as a driver. High heat conditions can cause drowsiness along with making you uncomfortable, so if your A/C is weak bring it to a certified mechanic right away.
Check your fluid levels often – The heat can be rough on your engine’s health as well as your battery. Make sure your battery is strapped in tight to avoid excessive vibration and all of your fluid levels are topped off to keep things cool and running smoothly.
Monitor your belts and hoses – Belts and hoses are at a higher risk of cracking and malfunctioning when they’re exposed to the hot weather. 7 Household Items That Make Winter Driving More Enjoyable

Winter can really be a drag as a driver (or a slide if you’re not careful). It’s already wet and cold, but if you don’t play your cards right you can end up late to work, frozen out of your car, stuck or struggling to see. It’s imperative to make sure that everything is in working order (see “Tips for Getting Your Car Winter Ready During Fall Car Care Month” ) so that driving your car is as safe as possible in the upcoming winter wonderland. But making things a little bit easier on yourself is never a bad idea either. Keep these household items in handy this winter to save some time, frustration and glide through winter like a pro:

Keep Old Socks in Your Glove Compartment – Socks have more uses than just keeping your feet warm. After putting your wipers up to avoid them freezing to your windshield, slip a pair of socks over them to avoid them getting icy all together. No more slamming them against your windshield or trying to see through the streaks on your windshield! A second pair of old socks is perfect for sliding over your shoes in case you DO get stuck, they’ll give your feet extra traction as you push.
Keep Gallon Sized Baggies Handy – Not only are you going to need something to put your wet socks in, but sliding a gallon sized bag over each of your mirrors can make your mornings easier too! Simply slide the bag off of your mirrors in the morning and voila! No more time spent scraping them free of ice.
Shaving Cream – One of the toughest parts of the winter months is finding the heat-to-fog ratio that you’re comfortable driving with. Turn the defrosters on full blast and you might get a little too warm inside the vehicle. Turn them down and it might be hard to see. Insert shaving cream. This handy household substance has the same active ingredients as anti-fog solutions, so simply rub a thin layer on your windshield and windows and then wipe it off to keep them fog free without having to ride to work in a sauna.
Put a 20lb bag of kitty litter in your trunk – This old, tried and true method is great for helping you get some traction if your vehicle is stuck. The weight of the bag can also help keep traction in your back tires.
Put a small rug over your windshield – The same concept applies here as with the wipers and baggies: less time scraping ice, more time inside of your warm car. What’s more awesome is that the rug can double as a way to get you unstuck in the slush or ice.
Spray the rubber on your doors with cooking spray – This keeps the doors from freezing shut. We call that a win.
Wipe your keys down with hand sanitizer – If the locks in your car door freeze, the alcohol in the sanitizer can help melt the ice inside the locks.

Cole’s Collision Uses Casual Friday to Help Charities

Cole’s Collision Centers, a multi-shop operator out of New York’s Capital Region, has started a new program this fall called the “Blue Jeans Initiative” to help raise money for charity.

The five-store MSO began the initiative this September after Josh Jewett, general manager of Cole’s Collision Centers, said he was approached by a few employees about creating a “casual Friday” at the shops.

“We thought that if we were going to start that, we should get those who wanted to participate to literally buy-in,” said Jewett. “We ask them to donate a few dollars to a collection box each time they wear jeans on a Friday, and the money raised will go toward a local charity.”

The ongoing initiative was rolled out across the company to all five shops, and Jewett said that the company has even taken it a step further and begun to invite its customers to donate with them. As for the charity the donations benefit, Cole’s has asked its employees to come to a collective decision on that each quarter.

“We’re focusing on local causes because it’s important to us to support the community that has supported our business,” said Jewett. “Our first beneficiary is Saratoga WarHorse, a group which pairs veterans with retired racehorses as a method of treating post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychological injuries related to their service.”

Jewett said that in the company’s first donation period, they’re on track to raise $500 each month.

“Community support is a central value for Cole’s Collision, and we’re lucky enough to give back every chance we get,” Jewett said. “We’ve funded several Make-A-Wish wishes and are ongoing contributors to a lot of other great organizations. The Blue Jeans Initiative is a great way to involve the whole staff in the contributions we make.”

Keep your tires properly inflated – Having properly inflated tires can increase gas mileage up to 3% and prolong the life of the tires.
Keep up on all of your regular maintenance – When your vehicle is well maintained and properly cared for, it keeps all of the parts working at peak performance, which means doing their job most efficiently.
Take it easy on the gas pedal – Accelerating at a reasonable rate, using cruise control and allowing your vehicle to coast at speed help to improve fuel economy.
Carpool – Not only does this save fuel and emissions, but it may improve your commute time if you live somewhere that has high-occupancy vehicle lanes.
Avoid tying things to the top of your vehicle – According to fueleconomy.gov, hauling cargo on your roof lowers fuel economy by up to 25% by increasing the aerodynamic drag.
Skip warming up your car in the morning – This old (and outdated) tradition was necessary when vehicles ran carbureted engines. However, now most vehicles are designed to be ready to drive within 30 seconds to a minute, about as long as it takes for the oil to get from the bottom to the top of your engine where the moving parts are. As far as the heat goes during the cold months, most vehicles are designed to warm up faster with the vehicle in motion. Leaving your vehicle to idle in your driveway just burns through fuel.

Cole’s Collision to be First Tesla Body Shop

On a day when gasoline prices continued to climb nationally, Tesla owners could be forgiven for feeling a bit smug about their vehicles. After all, they were at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland to welcome the opening of the largest array of chargers in the Northeast.

Best of all, those chargers are free.

Actually, they’re called Superchargers. That’s because they can have a Tesla battery pack fully charged and ready to go in anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, or in terms of distance traveled, “300 miles per hour,” said Allen Smith, a Tesla owner from Duanesburg.

The Crossgates installation includes 20 Superchargers, and most of the spaces were occupied Tuesday morning by what was likely the largest concentration of the all-electric cars ever in the Capital Region.

Tesla also operates a smaller Supercharger station at Colonie Center, and on Tuesday it announced that the five Cole’s Collision Centers in the Capital Region would soon be the Capital Region’s first Tesla-authorized body shop.

The 14,000 sq. ft. facility is located on 2.2 acres of formerly vacant land at 97 U.S. Route 4. Cole’s Collision operates four other collision centers throughout Albany and Saratoga counties. A special ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday evening, attended by Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce representatives and local elected officials and dignitaries.

Just like we depend on our vehicles to get us from point A to point B, our vehicles depend on us to take care of them so they can continue to do their job.

Check Your Maintenance Records – Are you up to date on oil changes, filter replacement, brakes, tire rotation, fluid replacement and other important maintenance tasks? If not (or if you’re not sure), then it’s time to have a certified mechanic service your vehicle.
Wash and Detail – Say goodbye to the grime of winter with a thorough exterior and interior cleaning of your vehicle. Give it a thorough wash, working from top to bottom, including the undercarriage. Break out the vacuum and give the seats and floors some attention. Wipe down the plastics and take glass cleaner to the windows. Top it all off with a little tire shine and a coat of wax.
 Tire Time – If you’ve been running snow tires, it’s probably time to switch to your summer tires. If your winter tires are on their last season, make a note for late summer/early fall to start shopping for a new set. Before putting your summer tires back on, look them over for rodent damage during storage and check the tread depth to make sure it is sufficient for another season.

Construction of the facility began in late 2016 following the approval of the land deal by the Rensselaer County Industrial Development Agency. The building, designed by m.besse architect, includes state-of-the-art auto repair and paint equipment available today, including a USA Italia spray booth. Parking areas on both sides of the building can accommodate up to 36 vehicles. Operations at this location will be in line with Cole’s longstanding commitment to environmental protection through the use of water-based paints and air filtration systems.

5 Tips for Removing Your Car from Winter Storage

As the weather gets nicer, gearheads everywhere are getting more and more excited to uncover their summer rides and hit the road. With your vehicle sitting for a few months, it’s a good idea to thoroughly go through it to make sure it is in proper condition for the cruises that lie ahead. Before hitting the road, here’s a basic checklist to go over:

Check the battery – If you removed your battery from your vehicle for storage, it’s likely to have a low charge level. If necessary, give it a charge before reinstalling it. Otherwise, check that it is installed securely and that the terminals are rust and corrosion free before starting up.
Check the fluid levels – Even if you changed the oil right before you winterized your car, it’s still a best practice to give it another oil change now. However, before even driving to the garage, make sure you check the dipstick for proper oil levels and signs of contamination. If there is a red or green tint to your oil, this is a good sign of contamination from your coolant system.
Check your tires – Do a visual check for any signs of damage and check the air pressure. It’s common for PSI to be low after sitting over the winter, so be sure to add air to any tire that is below the proper PSI.
Do a thorough visual check – Grab a flashlight and look underneath the hood and underneath your car for any leaks, chewed or torn hoses, harnesses or wires. Make sure to repair any problem areas that you find.
 Inspect brake pads and rotors – Go over your brakes visually to make sure that the pads are not worn down and the rotors are not rusted. Then make sure to press on the breaks a few times and observe that the pedal returns to the proper position on its own and is not too easy to press. If anything seems out of the ordinary, get it looked by at right away.

Cole’s Collision Centers Celebrates 10 Years in Business in the Capital Region

COLONIE, N.Y. – Cole’s Collision Centers, the area’s largest and fastest-growing family owned auto repair company, is celebrating ten years in the Capital Region. Since opening its first repair shop at 1904 Central Avenue in Colonie in January 2007, Cole’s has grown to four locations with a fifth location announced last month in North Greenbush, the company’s first in Rensselaer County. Opening is slated for later this year.

Cole’s has experienced more than 200 percent growth since opening locations in Ballston Spa and Wilton in 2010 and Clifton Park in 2012. To accommodate this and future growth, Cole’s moved its Colonie location to an expanded 18,000 square-foot facility in September 2015 at 1517 Central Avenue in Colonie. Cole’s Collision Centers employs approximately 100 people across its five locations.

“When we first opened, we had three employees and a mindset that we could offer this area a better quality of auto body work and customer service,” said John Cole, owner, Cole’s Collision Center. “This started out as a dream and now it’s an unbelievable blessing for us to be where we are. I just want to thank all of our customers, partners and vendors who stood behind us for this many years, to help get us here.”

Cole’s Collision Centers marked the celebration by donating $12,000 to Make-A-Wish Northeast New York. The donation will fund the wish of Tyler, a 15-year-old from Greenwich, N.Y. battling cystic fibrosis. Tyler is a Nike athletic shoe aficionado and will be heading to the company’s headquarters in Oregon to meet famed shoe designer Tinker Hatfield and see firsthand how the famous shoes are designed and manufactured.

John Cole Hosts Stewardship Meeting with Make-A-Wish

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y . – Cole’s Collision Centers today hosted a stewardship meeting with Tyler Murray and his family, following the completion of Tyler’s wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, sponsored by Cole’s. During the meeting, Tyler presented owner John Cole with a special wish poster print, outlining his wish and featuring photos of the experience.

Earlier this year, Cole’s Collision Centers donated $12,000 to fund Tyler’s wish. Tyler is a 15-year-old Nike shoe aficionado from Greenwich, N.Y. who also happens to be battling cystic fibrosis. Expert Summer Car Washing Tips

You don’t have to be a car enthusiast to appreciate the look of a well-cleaned car shimmering under the summer sun. However, before you take to the driveway with your garden hose and five gallon bucket, there a few important things to note. The dirt and grime on your vehicle can actually scratch your paint if you don’t wash your vehicle properly, and nothing ruins a good wash like leaving water spots behind. To get a streak free, paint safe shine this summer, give these summer car wash tips a try:

Use a high quality soap, sponge and drying towel – A good soap will be foamy, have an appropriate pH level, lubricity, will be gentle and have gloss enhancing ability. Before grabbing the cheapest soap off the shelf with the word ‘car’ on it, it’s always good to do your research. You’ll want a high quality sponge or car mitt to avoid streaking or scratching as well as a waffle knit microfiber towel for a gentle yet effective dry.
Fill up TWO buckets, not one – Fill up the first bucket with the proper amount of soap and water (always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the bottle.) The second bucket should be filled with just clean water. Use this to rinse your mitt or sponge every two to three swipes. You want to remove the dirt from your mitt as you pick it up so that you’re not dragging it back across your paint.
Choose a shady spot – You want your car to remain moist during the washing process. The water and soap will help to loosen the debris from the surface and prevent scratching. If your car is in the sun while you’re washing it you will end up with spots that dry more quickly than you can get to them. This will also cause water spots.
Wash your car on a breeze - free day – Again, a breeze will cause your wet car to dry faster than you want it too. It will also pick up dirt into the air which will just stick to your wet vehicle.
Always wash your vehicle from the top down – The bottom of your vehicle has the most dirt and grime, so washing from the top down reduces the amount of dragging this dirt back across your paint. Never opt for circular motions when washing your car; you want to use two gentle long strokes across your vehicle. The first will pick up the majority of the dirt and the second swipe will grab what remains. No need to press down.
Save the wheel wells, rocker panels and bumpers for last – These parts of your car are generally the grimiest and as we have previously stated, you don’t want to drag their grime upwards unintentionally. A best practice is to actually use a separate sponge or mitt specifically for these areas, rinsing it often.
 Use two towels to dry your car off – Again, just like when washing your car, you want to avoid using too much pressure when drying it. Use the first microfiber towel to dry your car in the same motions in which you washed it and ring it out often. Once the initial layer of water is wicked off of the surface, go back with the second dry towel to snag the remaining water for the best water spot free shine.

Once you’re done soaking in the beautiful nature of the preserve, there are tons of local food options, a casino, botanical gardens and the Ralph Wilson Stadium all within 10 miles of the park.

Just three hours away, this state capital is as beautiful as it is culturally rich. Described as having a ‘buzzing’ dining scene, Providence is the home to Brown University, the Roger Williams Park Zoo, the RISD Museum and an amazing art scene that is integral to the local culture. A must-see while you’re in Providence is the WaterFire Event pictured above, where a local not-for-profit organization uses events and art to generate a sense of community and bring people together.

Summertime means sun tans, ice cream, beach days and road trips. It’s no secret that the sunshine and warmer temperatures make great driving-with-the-windows-down weather and more people hit the asphalt in search of a summer adventure. But before you jump in to the summer rush full force, walk through this checklist with your vehicle to make sure both you and your ride get to your destination safe and happy:

Tire Time – You don’t still have your winter tires on, do you? If you do, it’s time to swap those out for your summer tires. Make sure your tires are inflated to the proper PSI and that the tread depth is sufficient. Don’t forget to inspect your spare tire, too.
Coolant Level – Hot temps can be harsh on your engine. It is critical that your coolant level is sufficient so that your engine doesn’t overheat. When your engine is hot, your coolant should be at or just below the max/full/hot line of the overflow reservoir. When your engine is cold, your coolant should be at or above the minimum/fill/cold line.
A/C Test – It’s likely been months since you’ve run your air conditioning, so just because it worked fine last time you used it doesn’t mean it’s still fine. Before venturing off into the sunset, run your A/C to make sure it doesn’t give off any smells and that it’s properly cooling your vehicle. If there are any issues, it’s time to have it looked at by a certified mechanic.
See Cleary – Whether it’s a summer thunderstorm bringing heavy rain or a dry day leaving a layer of dust and pollen, you will want to be prepared so that you can see well and drive safely. So check your windshield wiper blades to make sure they are doing a good job and check that your windshield wiper fluid is full.
Brake Check – When is the last time your brakes were inspected or replaced? Pads, rotors, calipers, lines…there are many critical components to a safe braking system. If you see rust, hear squeaking, smell burning or feel a soft pedal it’s time to get it to the shop.

In 1893, Charles Duryea and J. Frank, who were bicycle mechanics at the time, designed the first successful American gasoline automobile. Designed in Springfield Massachusetts, it would later be sold as the first American-made gas powered car in 1896.

Despite approximately 485 companies entering the market between 1899 and 1909, Henry Ford took the market by storm when he introduced the Model N in 1906. The Model N was quoted by the Cycle and Automobile Trade Journal as being “the very first instance of a low-cost motorcar driven by a gas engine having cylinders enough to give the shaft a turning impulse in each shaft turn which is well built and offered in large numbers.”

We all remember our first car. Just like we all remember the car that got us to and from our college campus, picked up our friends along the way, and ran us to get those final few dorm supplies before leaving home. As the fall semester draws near, we’ve put together some helpful tips to make sure your college student is ready to hit the road safely this semester:

Safety First – The drive to campus can be a long one, and breakdowns happen. Be prepared with an emergency kit, fully charged cell phone, and a few snacks in case you have to wait for help to arrive.
Check Engine Light – If any of your vehicle’s service lights are on, now is the time to get it to the garage and take care of any issues. Don’t increase the chance of a breakdown by procrastinating on service and repair.
Check Fluids – This tip winds up in nearly all of our car care posts, but there’s good reason for it. Running out of coolant, forgetting to change your oil or even being too low on wiper fluid can all be recipes for disaster. So don’t forget this vital step!
Headlights, Taillights & Turn Signals – Make sure you can see and that you can be seen by others. Check your headlights, taillights and turn signals to ensure all are working properly. If any are out, get them fixed before you begin your voyage to school.
 Battery Test – Does your vehicle start with ease, even on a cold morning? Are the terminals clean and secure? How old is your battery? Clean it, secure it, and replace it if necessary.

The Most Famous Roads in the U.S.

Spanning around 3,000 miles from coast to coast and various terrains, it’s no wonder the United States is a popular road trip destination. There’s plenty to see and plenty to do as you travel across the country. While planning your next trip, consider these famous U.S. roads:

Any of these actions could prevent you or another motorist from seeing another vehicle, bicyclist or pedestrian. If you’re concerned about having an extended commute, make an effort to leave your house earlier and avoid overscheduling yourself so that you’re not rushing between destinations.

Route 66 – So famous that multiple artists have made a song about it, good old Route 66 runs all the way from Illinois to California. The iconic roadway was one of the country’s first highway systems and runs over 2,000 miles winning it a place in history as well as the hearts of Americans everywhere.
The Million Dollar Highway – Also known as US Highway 550, this famous American road runs all the way from New Mexico to Colorado. While it doesn’t quite reach the length of Route 66, you can still get your kicks on this beautifully scenic roadway. Built in the late 1880s, the highway became famous for the spectacular scenery and the abundance of small adventure towns and ghost villages it is now lined with.
Pacific Coast Highway – California State Route 1 runs along the Pacific Coast of California (as you may have guessed from the name). As if running along an awe-inspiring stretch of ocean views wasn’t enough to garner attention, the highway is also commonly featured in music videos and movies.
UFO Highway – Nevada State Route 375 is a 98 mile stretch of highway located in south-central Nevada. The stretch of road runs mostly through unoccupied desert and is most famous for being near the rumored location of Area 51, and for a cluster of UFO sightings.
 Gold Rush Highway 49 – Last but not least, Historic Highway 49 claims its spot on the list of America’s most famous roads. Also located in California, this famous state route will take you back in time to – you guessed it – the gold rush! The 295 mile highway is famously dotted with mining communities that have maintained their 1850s charm from the time of the also famous ‘49ers who traveled to the area hoping to strike gold.

As summer vacation comes to a close, the crisp fall wind stirs up a new kind of excitement: Back-to-School season! Alongside the hustle and bustle of school books and afterschool sports, crowded crosswalks and big yellow school buses start to take their places. This time of year can pose some seasonal safety hazards that everyone should be aware of. If you’re going to be traveling the streets by car this school year, here are some important things to remember to make sure everyone remains safe on the roads:

Patience is a Virtue – Children are crossing the streets, workers are helping them do so safely, teenagers are on their bicycles and buses are all around. During the school season it’s extra important not to:

Pass other vehicles or school busses to get around them.
Rush through red lights or stop signs so that you don’t get ‘stuck’.
Double-park in the school drop off zone to avoid waiting in line.
Park across the street and make your kids walk across to the school to save time.

Pay Close Attention – With all of the extra activity on the roads, it can be easy to miss something if you’re not paying close attention. Keep your eyes on the road and stay alert at all times. Be aware of when a school bus ahead of you is slowing to a stop, watch for bikes crossing the road or riding on the shoulder, and remain mindful of children walking on sidewalks as they can sometimes be unpredictable. To avoid distractions on your drive:

Keep your cell phone on do not disturb your entire drive and avoid checking it until you’ve reached your destination.
Keep the radio at a volume where you can hear someone yelling outside of the vehicle.
Set any GPS devices to your destination before pulling out of your driveway.
Make sure that your mirrors and seat are comfortably positioned before moving.

Know Your School’s Regulations – Whether you have a child in school or not, it’s important to be aware of the school’s drop off and pickup locations and procedures as well as the start and release times. Also be aware of the speed limit in the school zone and where the school zone perimeter is. This allows all motorists on the road to work together without causing roadblocks, frustration and potentially dangerous situations. It also gives you a good indication as to when the roads will be busiest so that you can be aware of large groups of pedestrians and plan alternatives routes to your destinations if necessary.

Watch Where You Stop – When a school bus stops to let children on and off of it, all vehicles should be stopped a minimum of ten feet away from the bus. You can create a safe environment by avoiding following the bus too closely and staying alert to when the bus begins to slow down for a stop. Similarly, it’s important to never stop your vehicle in the middle of a crosswalk as it forces pedestrians to stray from the crosswalk putting them in unnecessary danger.

Halloween Night Road Safety Tips

Every year, as dusk sets on October 31, streets everywhere fill with joyful shrieks as costumed children (and adults!) trek from door to door collecting treats from their neighbors. Although the night is themed with pretend danger, real dangers exist for drivers. As a motorist, expect to be sharing the roads on Halloween night with heavy foot traffic and extra vehicle traffic.

Drive slowly – Especially if you are driving through a residential neighborhood, it is a good practice to slow down for the night so that you can stop quicker if needed.
Follow basic traffic rules – This seems like a no brainer, but on a night when more people than usual will be out and about, a little more caution can’t hurt. This is not the night to be driving over the speed limit, swerving around slow vehicles or passing on the right.
Put the phone, device, anything in your hands down – Texting and driving increases the chances of an accident exponentially. Your focus needs to remain on the road and surrounding areas at all times.
Keep your view clear – Don’t pull out of the driveway until your windows are completely wiped clear or defogged, make sure your headlights are clean and working properly, and don’t drive your car if you have wipers that need replacing. Anything that could reduce your ability to see your surroundings is a danger.
 Keep your music low – If your stereo is blasting, then you aren’t likely to hear what is going on around you. Keep the volume at a level where you can still hear people outside.

October is here! The leaves are changing, colder weather is arriving, and Fall Car Care Month has officially begun. In between apple picking and pumpkin carving, take some time to make sure your vehicle is in proper working condition after the heat of summer has taken its toll and before the cold of winter arrives.

Check all fluids – oil, coolant, transmission fluid, windshield wiper fluid, etc.
Make sure there are no leaking hoses or cracked belts under the hood.
Have your suspension and steering checked.
Check all brake components – pads, rotors, calipers, lines.
Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazards should be working properly and lenses should be clean.
Check your windshield wiper blades to make sure they aren’t leaving streaks and they aren’t worn down.
Make sure that all tires have sufficient tread and pressure. Start thinking about snow tires, too.
Check your battery life and replace it if necessary.
Examine your exhaust system for leaks, rot or loose parts.

When in doubt, bring your vehicle to a certified mechanic and ask them to thoroughly look over your car for any maintenance or repair items that are needed.

How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter

It’s that time of year again…the temperatures drop from here going forward, the air gets more dry, precipitation increases and everything gets a little darker. As we welcome winter, there are a few things to check off our winter car prep to-do list:

Think Snow Tires – Winter roads in the Northeast are cold, slippery, slushy, icy, snowy…you name it. Be sure to get your snow tires on before the snow flies. If your snow tires from last winter are low in tread depth, it’s time to shop for a new set.
Fill Up on Antifreeze – As the temperatures drop, the chance for freezing increases. It is important that your antifreeze is filled to the proper level. Consult your owner’s manual for guidance on how to fill or change the antifreeze.
Inspect Your Battery – Winter’s harsh temperatures are particularly rough on the battery in your car. Test your battery’s capacity for a charge, make sure that it’s not rusted and that all connections are secure. You don’t want to find yourself stuck in the next blizzard with a dead battery, or running late to work because your car won’t start. If your battery is old (check the date), it’s a good idea to replace it before winter is here.
Stock Up Your Emergency Kit – If you DO find yourself stranded and waiting on the tow truck you’re going to want to have some essentials handy. Make sure you pack some water and nonperishable snacks, warm blankets, flashlight, flares or reflective triangle, a first aid kid, kitty litter to help you get your tires unstuck, and even a jump pack. Some extras to throw in your kit are portable battery packs for your phone and a lighter in case the flares run out or don’t light.
 See Clearly – Now is a good time to make sure you have an effective window scraper and snow brush in your car. You also want to check up on your wipers both front and back to make sure they can handle the season, clean your headlights and tail lights, and make sure your heat and defrosters are working properly.

The only thing better than the endless cookies, festive music and general sense of cheer that this time of year brings is a good old fashioned holiday road trip to see the family! But before the fun begins, run down this quick travel checklist to help keep your trip merry and bright:

Check Your Tire Pressure – The cold weather and fluctuating temperatures are notorious for making your tire pressure drop. Having tires that aren’t properly inflated can reduce traction, worsen gas mileage and increase the chances of blowing out a tire in some circumstances. Before hitting the road, be sure to check the pressure on all tires and add air if necessary.
Fill Up on Windshield Washer Fluid – ‘Tis the season for dirty windshields! It’s always important that you can see clearly while you’re driving. However, this time of year when black ice and potential hazards are more imminent it’s even more important. Make sure you have a clear line of sight for your whole trip by filling up your windshield washer fluid.
Pack the Essentials – Of course you have your clothes and gifts and favorite electronics on board. We’re referring to your snow brush, ice scraper and a phone charger. You never know when winter weather will strike, and you never know when you might need to make a call or check for directions.
Give an ETA – Check the trip length ahead of time and let whoever you’re going to visit know when to expect you. Plus keep them updated if it changes. This way if you run into bad weather or a breakdown, they’ll know something is up based on the time. It will also give your Aunt Suzie a heads up about when she should plan to have that roast out of the oven!
Check the Weather – Winter is certainly a time for fickle weather if there ever was one. It’s a good idea to check the weather multiple times before leaving for your trip. Best practice is to check before scheduling your trip to gauge when the best time to leave is, and minimally the night before leaving so that you can make any appropriate adjustments before hitting the road.
 Leave Ahead of Schedule – Always hit the road before you need to. Giving yourself extra time will come in handy if a breakdown occurs or if you run into inclement weather. It also gives you some breathing room to avoid driving in a panicked or rushed state should something set you back.

5 Easy Winter Car Care Tips

Winter is here! The Northeast is notorious for snow, sleet, freezing rain, ice, slush and freezing temperatures. Winter weather can be harsh on your vehicle, however there are some simple things that you can do to help keep your vehicle running smoothly and looking good throughout the season and beyond.

Wash Off the Salt – Rock salt is a popular tool to use during the winter to keep the roads free of ice. However, this salt can quickly cover your vehicle and eventually cause unnecessary rust and corrosion. Be sure to wash salt from your vehicle (including the undercarriage) as soon as possible.
Monitor Tire Pressure – As outside temperatures rise during the day and fall at night, it’s not uncommon for your tire pressure to vary as well. Check your tire pressure often and if any tire is low add air right away to avoid uneven wear and even a blowout. Reference the sticker on the inside of your driver door for the proper PSI for your vehicle.
Keep Carpets Clean –Protect your carpets from being worn down or stained due to salt and slush by utilizing proper fitting floor mats and vacuuming/shampooing the carpets regularly.
Refill Windshield Washer Fluid – Winter is an incredibly important time of year to be able to see clearly while you’re driving. We often use more windshield washer fluid during the winter months as road spray constantly dirties the windshield. Check your windshield washer fluid reservoir often and refill as necessary to ensure you don’t run out when you need it most.
 Clear Snow & Ice Wisely – Not only is it important to clear snow and ice from your vehicle for safety reasons, it is also important to clear them in a way that doesn’t damage your vehicle. Use tools specifically designed for the task (i.e. snow brush and ice scraper) and stay away from household tools (i.e. shovels, garage brooms, hot water) that are too harsh for your vehicle.

Happy New Year! There is an entirely new decade upon us, which means a clean slate to set intentions and goals for how we’d like to see our lives look in the next ten years. While you’re busy making your list of New Year’s resolutions, we’d like to remind you not to forget your vehicle. Here’s a list of resolutions to consider making for your car this year:

Stick to a Service Schedule – Preventative maintenance is easy to put off or forget. However, just like regular check-ups at the doctor, preventive maintenance is an extremely effective way of reducing unnecessary wear and tear and catching early signs of potential problems. For 2020, resolve to get your oil changed on time, your tires rotated as recommended, and your vehicle thoroughly inspected by a certified mechanic for problems you may be unaware of.
Regular Washes – Keeping the exterior of your vehicle clean prevents environmental contaminants (such as dirt, salt, tree sap, bugs, etc.) from adhering to the paint and damaging it. Scratches and damage to the paint of your car can lead to rust spots and the domino effect continues from there. Set a goal of washing your vehicle once per week.
Waxing Your Vehicle – You may think washing your vehicle is enough, but waxing it is even better. Waxing your vehicle at least once per season helps protect the paint from sun damage and environmental contaminants. It also looks awesome!
Fix Problems Early – Waiting to make car repairs can make the problems worse and in the long run, more expensive. A vehicle is a carefully designed machine, if one part is broken or working improperly, chances are that it’s causing other parts to work overtime or improperly to compensate. Taking this into consideration, it’s only a matter of time before they become damaged as well. It’s not uncommon for garages to see a problem that was once a small inexpensive fix come into their shop requiring extensive work and the larger bill that comes along with it.
 Rideshare More Often – Ridesharing, or even just making it a point to take the most efficient route to each destination this year, can significantly reduce the amount of wear and tear on your vehicle.

Help Your Vehicle Say Goodbye to Winter

March 19th marks the first day of spring! Warmer weather is right around the corner and soon to follow are sunny summer drives. But before you say hello to spring, you have to say goodbye to winter. Follow these quick tips to help you put winter in the rear view mirror:

Take off the snow tires: You shouldn’t be driving on snow tires through the spring and summer because of the wear they can endure. You want to make sure the treads stay deep; if you wear them down, they won’t grip as well once winter comes back around. If you have studded snow tires, be sure they are removed by April 30th.
Wash and wax your car: Lots of salt is used on the roads in the winter to deal with icy conditions. This salt can quickly coat the exterior of your vehicle and lead to rust and corrosion. Thoroughly wash your vehicle, including the undercarriage, to get rid of all of this damaging salt. Waxing your car adds a layer of protection from sunlight and heat when moving into the summer months.
Vacuum the inside: Throughout the winter, your boots have tracked in dirty sand and salt. Taking care of the interior of your car is very important to maintaining its condition and value. So take some time to thoroughly vacuum the floors, floor mats and seats.
Check the air in the tires: Changing temperatures outside can mean changing PSI (pounds per square inch) for your tires. Proper PSI can be found on the inside of the driver’s door. Check the air pressure of all tires including the spare.
 Examine Windshield Wipers: Check the wiper blades for cracks in the rubber. Winter weather can cause damage to the rubber and impair their function. The blades should move smoothly over the windshield and dry the glass. If they bump along and leave streaks, it’s best to replace them before springtime rain showers arrive.

April is National Car Care Month! This annual tradition is the perfect time for spring vehicle maintenance. Here are a few ideas for car owners to consider:

Service Schedule – Check your records to see if you are up to date on all recommended service for your vehicle such as oil changes and brakes. Consult your owner’s manual if you’re not sure what your vehicle requires. When in doubt, ask a certified mechanic.
Wash & Detail – During the winter your car has gathered salt, dirt, and grime inside and out. Be sure to wash and wax the exterior of your car, making sure to get the undercarriage too. Vacuum the interior and wipe down the dash. Taking time to keep your car clean will help it retain value and be more dependable.
Tire Swap – If you have snow tires on your car now is the time to switch over to summer tires. When you take your snow tires off, take note of how worn the tread is…do you need to budget for new ones in the fall?
Windshield Wipers – Ice and snow can wear down your windshield wiper blades. If they are visibly worn or are streaking, it’s time for a new set.
Lights On – Spring is also a good time to pay attention to your headlights. If they are foggy or dirty, grab a headlight restoration kit and get them back to crystal clear so you can see better at night. Everyone loves a good summer night cruise!

A Salute to Automakers Helping in the Fight Against COVID-19

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold, the automotive industry is stepping up and using their resources to contribute to the fight against the virus. We’d like to take a moment to highlight several automakers that are rising to the occasion.

Fiat is working to produce 1 million face masks per month. Jaguar is working to produce several thousand visors per week. Toyota is using their 3D printing technology to produce face shields.

Many car manufacturers are stepping up to produce ventilators. Ford has committed to produce 50,000 ventilators by early July and GM has promised to produce 30,000 by the end of August. Tesla has also committed to manufacture ventilators and has already sourced and sent hundreds of ventilators from other manufacturers to hospitals in the U.S.

Other companies joining the cause in various ways include BMW, Ferrari, Fiat-Chrysler, Volkswagen and Mercedes.

We salute all of the automakers around the world who are mobilizing to meet the needs of the global community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Did you know the Hummer is coming back? It’s true. General Motors is bringing back the iconic rig as an electric pickup and SUV. Full details of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV have yet to be released, but it was recently revealed that the vehicle will feature removable roof panels. Read the full story on caranddriver.com.

Getting Your Car Ready for Summer

Summer 2020 officially kicks off on June 20th. This summer is likely to be very different than our usual summers with ongoing social distancing and safety precautions. But you can still enjoy the warm, sunny weather and beautiful skies by going for plenty of summer drives!

Let’s get your vehicle ready for summer:

Check the A/C – While windows down is often preferred for a summer cruise, sometimes you might just want to cool down with the A/C. Have you tested it lately?
Find Your Sunshade – Do you know where you sunshade is? Putting a sunshade inside your windshield while your car is parked in the sun is a great way to keep the inside of the vehicle cooler for when you’re ready to get in it while also protecting the dash from fading.
Wax On – Keep your ride looking its best with a thorough wash and wax. Find a shady spot and start shining it up. Not only will it look great, but your vehicle’s paint will be protected from the sun after you wax it.
Test the Lights – Summer night drives are awesome, but make sure you’ll be able to see well and that others will be able to see you. Test your high beams, low beams, turn signals, fog lights, taillights and brake lights. If any are out, get them fixed before your next night cruise.
Fill Up on Fluids – The heat of summer can be harsh on your vehicle’s systems. Check all fluids, especially your coolant, to make sure nothing is low and top off as needed. If you’re due for service, make an appointment with your mechanic.

Don’t Put Off Important Vehicle Maintenance

We are living in challenging times and we know you probably have a lot on your mind, which may result in your vehicle sliding down the priority list. However, it is critical to keep up on important vehicle maintenance so that your vehicle remains reliable and so that you avoid unnecessary and costly repairs.

Oil Change – This is probably the most well-known vehicle maintenance item, but sometimes it may not feel like a big deal to procrastinate on actually getting it done. Don’t wait! Oil changes are extremely important to your vehicle’s engine health. Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended oil change schedule.
Tire Rotation – This is an easy one that is often done when you get an oil change. A tire rotation involves rotating the tires on your vehicle so that the front tires move to the back and the back tires move to the front. This helps promote even tread wear on all four tires so that you don’t have to replace some tires sooner than others.
Brakes – Are your brakes making noise or do they feel squishy? These are signs that your vehicle may need new brakes. Waiting can cause further needed repairs and can be dangerous. Make an appointment to have your brakes inspected soon.
Filters – Your oil filter will get replaced when you get an oil change, but that’s not the only filter that you should know about. The air filter and fuel filter should also be replaced periodically. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended service schedule or ask your mechanic.
Wash & Detail – When it comes to cleaning your vehicle, it’s not just about looks. Keeping your vehicle clean helps protect it from deteriorating and helps retain its value. So break out the hose, sponge and vacuum this weekend!

Take care of your vehicle and it will take care of you. Your vehicle’s health is important, so set aside a little time for it this summer.

Like most events this year, the car show scene has seen a large number of cancellations and postponements. However, some event organizers are pivoting to virtual car shows to give participants and enthusiasts a little taste of the car show life.

The month of October features several virtual car shows from as far away as California to as close to home as Ballston Spa.

Local favorite The Way We Were Car Show in Ballston Spa traditionally takes place the Sunday before Columbus Day on Front Street in Ballston Spa. This year’s physical show will not go on, but instead organizers will be holding The Way It Is Virtual Car Show on Facebook. There is no cost to enter your vehicle. The Keene Pumpkin Festival in Keene Ontario has cancelled its annual event this month however they are going on with several virtual events including a virtual car show from October 12-16 with a People’s Choice winner being announced on October 19.

Temple City in California will be hosting a Virtual Classic Car Showcase on October 10 and 11. The showcase will feature pre 1980’s antiques, hot rods, classic, customs, muscle cars and more.

The Japanese Classic Car Show, typically held in Long Beach, California, will be taking place online October 3-10 as the JCCS World Matsuri Week. Organizers expect international participation.

2021 Car Care Resolutions

Happy New Year! It’s time to say goodbye to 2020 and hello to 2021. As you set your sights on new goals and make your New Year’s resolutions, consider adding your car to the 2021 list.

Make Routine Service a Priority – Get familiar with the recommended service schedule for your vehicle (see your owner’s manual) and stick to it. Write it on your calendar, put a reminder on your phone, do whatever you need to do to make sure you keep your vehicle properly serviced to avoid unnecessary repairs.
Be a Good Listener – It’s always wise to be a good listener in life, whether it be at home or at work. But it’s also wise to be a good listener while in your vehicle. Listen to it start, listen to it idle, listen to it shift, listen to it brake. If you hear something that doesn’t sound right, get it looked at by your mechanic.
Drive with Love – Take it easy on your vehicle by gradually taking off from stops and gradually coming to a stop. Be sure to come to a complete stop before shifting from reverse to drive. Slow down over potholes and train tracks. Your car will thank you.
Keep It Clean – Wash your car more often, vacuum and detail the interior, and give it a coat of wax at least a few times over the course of the year. Don’t forget to wash the undercarriage!
Make Time for the Little Things – Check the tire pressure, top off the windshield washer fluid, clean out the trunk. Proper complete car care involves a series of little things that add up to big smiles for you, your passengers and your vehicle.
